Assistant Technician


Calling all Assistant Highways Technicians and bridge Inspectors - XEIAD are the largest provider of civil infrastructure inspections in the UK.

We pride ourselves on supporting the end to end management of a range of civil engineering assets, helping asset owners and managers keep critical infrastructure safe, reduce risk and maintenance costs as well as extend asset life.

To meet growth ambitions, XEIAD are looking to appoint a Highways Assistant Bridge Technician to support in the delivery of a significant portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects across the UK. You will be working as part of a specialist team on some of our key infrastructure projects such as the QE2 inspection, post tensioned special inspections and concrete testing contracts.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone starting out in this field to gain experience in Highways bridge engineering. You will be placed on an internal Training Agreement and supported to achieve Inspector or Senior Inspector BICS status. Additional support can be provided to pursue Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers if desired.

Specialising in difficult access our teams have extensive experience inspecting structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, tunnels, and shafts across industry sectors such as Rail, Highways, Marine, Utilities and Defence.

Main Purpose:

Assist with maintenance inspections and record information to best practice in accordance with the requirements of the Inspection Manual for Highway Structures, CS450 and other bespoke DMRB standards.


  • Assist with Desktop Studies of structures to provide specific methodologies for inspections including inventory and defect reviews, access requirements and constraints.
  • Assist with and report inspections into different Asset Management Systems and contribute to the use of innovative technology in inspections.
  • Complying with the instructions of Project Managers, site supervisors and safety supervisors as appropriate on any project to which you are assigned.
  • Advance checking, cleaning, servicing, maintenance and preparation of tools and equipment required for projects as directed and within your capability.
  • The proper use and safe-keeping of any company plant and equipment for which you may from time to time be responsible.  
  • Satisfactory achievement in all assigned training.
  • Identify and submit close calls in line with company procedures.
  • Undertake site works in a safe manner in-line with company procedures and the safe systems of work put in place for each task.
  • Cooperating in company audits and quality control procedures.
  • Fully engage with and actively work towards timely completion of BICS accreditation.

What are we looking for?

Essential requirements

  • UK Driving Licence
  • Organisation/Industry Awareness
  • Awareness of and progression towards the Inspector level qualification under the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS)

Desirable requirements

  • HNC/HND in civil or structures engineering(would be an advantage)
  • Knowledge of risk management/assessment/ inspection
